Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

UPDATED: Our core values of excellence, integrity and compassion shape everything we do, including the way we think about diversity and inclusion. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer, and our culture fosters diversity and inclusion. Over the past 17 years, we have created and refined our Shared Governance to ensure that all of our colleagues are on a level playing field where all ideas are valued. We are also fortunate to have a culturally diverse community from which to attract recruits. It is important to us that our employee mix reflects the ethnicities of the inpatient population. Every year, we conduct an analysis of our hospitals. Recent data analyses show that the employee population closely resembles that of the inpatient population. In addition, while other organizations encourage employees to retire by a certain age, we are known for retaining employees for an extraordinarily long time: 11.9% of our current workforce is over 62 years old and 14.4% of our current workforce has been working at Cottage for 20 or more years. Not only do we actively seek to retain our employees, we celebrate and honor those who have been with us for milestone anniversaries. Every year at an employee recognition dinner, our colleagues with the three highest milestones are recognized individually with a short video highlighting their accomplishments. On International Cuisine Day, there is a special presentation at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital cafeteria that includes the employee who helped create the menu as well as information about the country from which it came. The first International Cuisine Day featured a Persian menu from dietician Samin Moham and chef Shaina Keough with Khoresh-e Fesenjoon, Persian chicken stew with pomegranate and walnuts, along with saffron rice, roasted vegetables, salad-e Shirazi and pomegranate lemonade.
