Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

More Heroes NEW: At Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Mary Arimoto, Preston Beye and Lyan Cogan were presented with a patient with a deep leg wound. In addition to providing care and treatment, the CH team also coordinated with the family to get his suit to SBCH and get the patient able to be discharged in time for an important walk down the aisle. The Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital Emergency Department was involved in a mass casualty incident involving overdoses at a nearby party. The ED team – Michael Coombs, John Buckley, Vincent Russo, Esther Smith, Melissa Zaragoza – not only managed several patients who had difficulty breathing but also managed the already full department. Michael was in charge that night and displayed teamwork at its best. Kate Moesker , RN, Nurse Navigator, Santa Barbara Neuroscience Institute, took on the recently created role of Brain Tumor Navigator and had the idea of starting a Brain Tumor Walking Program after seeing that many of her patients were not getting regular exercise and were withdrawing from friends and family as a result of their medical condition. These walking groups now enable patients to meet one another and share common experiences, or just simply walk with others who understand their journey. See her story here . Heroic Recognition on the Go with a New Cottage Mobile App NEW: To make it more convenient for Cottage employees to show their appreciation, Cottage has a new mobile device app that allows employees to easily nominate other employees as Everyday Heroes when they witness remarkable efforts. “The darkest time in my life is my light today. That is a gift.” – Nan Schooley, admissions facilitator, Cottage Residential Center NEW: Nan is the first person people talk to when they ask for help, when they’re in need of treatment, when they’re in crisis and have hit bottom in their addiction. It’s much more than a job for Nan; it’s her purpose. When a former resident tells her, “Hey, Nan, I’m sober, and my life is better than I could have ever imagined,” it is beyond fulfilling. And she understands what they mean on an even deeper level. “My own experience in recovery gives me insight to what’s happening when someone walks in,” Nan said. “I tell them that my heart is with them. I know the pain they’re in and that it will get better. We can do this together; they don’t have to be alone ever again.” Nan has been working with people in recovery for about 25 years. “From my own experience, the worst time in my life has become my biggest gift,” Nan said. “The darkest time in my life is my light today. That is a gift.” We thank Nan for sharing her gift and making lives better for so many. Cottage Residential Center offers licensed and accredited alcohol and drug treatment with inpatient and outpatient options and provides personalized, integrative and family-oriented care for each resident.
