Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

Shared Governance UPDATED: Shared Governance involves everyone in the organization in making decisions that affect their jobs, work environment and the direction of our organization as a whole. Recruits and employees tell us that it is a big part of the appeal in wanting to work at Cottage. Over the past 20 years, we have created and are continually enriching a system of engagement and accountability that ensures a positive staff/management partnership. Cottage Health has implemented Shared Governance throughout our entire organization. The four principles of Shared Governance are: Partnership Accountability Equity Ownership Employees learn early on in the “Introduction to Shared Governance” class that they can visualize the process by thinking to themselves, “Cottage would be a better place if…” We want to bring forward those ideas and possibilities. Employees here understand that our core value of excellence can only be achieved if employees share their ideas to make CH a better place. This is evidenced in the number of Voice Forms (employee suggestions) we receive every year, and the popularity of a Shared Governance event called “C3” (Collaborate, Create and Celebrate), which draws 200-300 attendees to a 4-hour offsite meeting where breakfast is served by our Nutrition Services team and departments and invited guests speakers give inspiring and educational presentations. A team building exercise is part of the day, and executive leadership and Board members regularly attend this event alongside hospital volunteers, managers and employees from every department.
