N Health Careers Academy – Offering Career Education and Hands-on Training to High School Students UPDATED: The San Marcos Health Careers Academy was created through a partnership with San Marcos High School, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Santa Barbara City College. The goal of the academy is to provide a wide variety of health career experiences so that, upon graduation, students are prepared for entrance into colleges, universities or technical schools or for employment in skilled entry-level jobs. Since 2001, Cottage Health has contributed financially, donated patient care equipment and provided facilities where students are able to learn through hands-on experience during the three-year program. “The Health Careers Academy has opened many doors for me. I am grateful to have been part of it.” O Commuter Program – Work Travel Made Easy and Affordable UPDATED: Encouraging environmentally friendlier modes of transportation is the goal of the Commuter Program. For employees with electric vehicles, plans are being implemented to install charging stations at Cottage Health campuses. For employees seeking to ease traffic and parking congestion, and save money at the same time, Cottage offers a 50% reduction in bus or train ticket costs. Cottage also provides up to $75 a month to employees who use alternative transportation at least 80% of the time as well as a 50% subsidy for those who use van pools. “I needed to move 76 miles away to help care for my mother. Driving to work in traffic was a nightmare, but the commuter program made a world of difference. I take Amtrak along the beautiful coastline and then hop on a bus at that takes me straight to Cottage. It’s much faster, easier and cheaper.” M Research Collaboration – Medical Breakthroughs for Better Outcomes UPDATED: Research at Cottage Health is advancing medical science and improving patient care for local residents and beyond. Currently, over 200 open studies are being conducted by the Cottage Health Research Institute. Many of the studies were initiated by Cottage Health employees from across various departments. Accepted for publication in The American Surgeon (Oct. 2019) is a paper on “Debris Flow Syndrome” that evaluates injuries, treatments and outcomes of survivors of the Montecito debris flow. Another study between Cottage Children’s Medical Center and UCSB aims to improve outcomes for very low birth weight infants and provide psychosocial support for their families. Cottage Health Research Institute regularly announces calls for proposals to all Cottage staff and supports initiatives to help discover new cures and develop better practices for health care of the future. 8/119 Start | Contents | Highlights | Business Description | Hiring & Welcoming | Inspiring | Speaking | Listening | Thanking | Developing | Caring | Celebrating | Sharing • Highlights 6.11
