Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

The Inspiration Behind a Cottage Educator NEW: “I started my employment with Cottage in 1988, shortly after I received my Associate Degree in Nursing from SBCC. Life took me away from Cottage for a while and when I returned, I was newly separated and learning how to balance work and life as a single mother. The Director of Education at the time, Mary Jane Ensberg, was influential in collaborating with California State University Los Angeles to bring both a BSN and MSN program onsite at Cottage. I was among those in the first group of students. We were provided with the opportunity to utilize Cottage supported loans, scholarships and tuition reimbursement, to reduce the cost to each individual. Department Managers allowed flexibility in scheduling to meet classroom and preceptorship requirements. Without each of these elements of support, I would not have been able to obtain my BSN, and then later my MSN. Being an Educator at heart, I eventually transferred into the Education Department. And in 2018, I became the Director of Education. Cottage continues to support staff going back to school to advance their education through providing clinical experiences, preceptorships, loans and Tuition Reimbursement. In paying it forward, I feel my role is to engage, empower and support our employees in lifelong learning. My goal is to ensure safe patient care and personal and professional growth of the individual.” – Shelley R.
