Supplemental Materials Video : Collaborative Research Symposium The Cottage Outpatient Surgery Center The Cottage Outpatient Surgery Center has been providing outpatient surgery for more than 45 years. Treating up to 4,900 patients a year, the Center has cared for patients from three weeks of age to 101 years old while consistently garnering overall patient satisfaction ratings of 90% or higher from Press Ganey. The Cottage Health Research Institute UPDATED: The Cottage Health Research Institute (CHRI) is an integral part of Cottage Health. Currently, there are 235 open research studies at Cottage Health. CHRI offers consultation, liaison, and administrative resources to researchers to support the translation of clinical and academic research and graduate and post graduate training. Each year, Cottage Health conducts a Research Symposium to share research studies and advancements and connect professionals from Cottage Health, University of California Santa Barbara and local biotech industries. The symposia series is underwritten by Alex Pananides and Jan Dunbar. When the first symposium was being planned four years ago, Alex had a vision and specific advice: “Hold the event in a special location with good food and top amenities. Keep it a reasonable size, and provide time for people to connect with one another. We want participants to understand how much we value their ideas and their potential to impact and improve scientific knowledge and medical care.” Valuing collaborations within the organization, CHRI encourages Cottage Health employees from different departments and positions to bring forward ideas and projects to explore, with the hope that discoveries made will translate to cures and improve patient outcomes. A few of the current research projects at CHRI include: • Accepted for publication in The American Surgeon (Oct. 2019) is a paper on “Debris Flow Syndrome” that evaluates injuries, treatments and outcomes of survivors of the Montecito debris flow. • Current study between Cottage Children’s Medical Center and UCSB aims to improve outcomes for very low birth weight infants and provide psychosocial support for their families.
