Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

Individual Welcome Cottage welcomes employees in individual ways, too. Departments express their own special personalities and humor in welcoming new hires. Examples include creative welcome signs, welcome breakfasts or lunches and booklets that include colleagues’ photos, bios, hobbies and fun facts, along with practical information on navigating the health system. Our many long-tenured employees are generous in mentoring new employees and with passing along skills, knowledge and efficiencies to the potential future leaders of our organization. On medical units, each new nurse is paired with a preceptor, a mentor who guides them through a comprehensive 12 to 13 week orientation. This orientation is specifically tailored to the nurse’s skill level and background and, if more or less time is needed, the orientation is adjusted accordingly. Once complete, new nurses are acclimated to their new roles at Cottage. On our Oncology Unit, the nurses choose to celebrate each new hire’s completion of orientation with a party -- complete with cake and a crown for the honoree, welcoming them as part of this closely-knit unit. Toolbox for Success UPDATED: After they arrive in their respective departments, new employees participate in department-specific orientations. Over the next year, they attend classes that further develop their knowledge and skills in communication and change management. These classes include: • Collaborative Dialogue – How we talk to each other • Patients First – How we talk with visitors and patients • Introduction to Shared Governance – How we participate in changing the organization • Be Resilient! – Attendees learn and practice mindfulness techniques that are beneficial at work and beyond Employees take additional courses that include safety training, diversity in the workplace, and prevention of sexual harassment and workplace violence. HR and Management Support Throughout an employee’s first year, we provide scheduled informal reviews with managers and regular check-ins to make sure they are comfortable with their work. Each employee is matched with a member of the Employee Relations team who serves as a resource for the entire duration of their career with Cottage Health. We believe our discipline around this onboarding process is one of the reasons our employee retention rates are so high. 45/119 Start | Contents | Highlights | Business Description | Hiring & Welcoming | Inspiring | Speaking | Listening | Thanking | Developing | Caring | Celebrating | Sharing • Hiring & Welcoming 6.24
