Cottage Health 2020 Culture Audit

2018 Voice Forms were submitted in these areas: 43% Patient related (Equipment, Infection Control and Patient Care) 32% Operational Improvement (Patient Access, Facilities, Hospitality, Policy and IT Systems) 27% Employee Satisfaction (Benefits and Compensation, Nutrition, Staffing and Training & Education) • A Blood-Saving Idea for Neonatal ICU One employee brought up the important issue of NICU Lab Draw Volume. She suggested that they draw less blood from the babies, because sometimes getting 1.2ml to send to the lab requires more than one heel stick and more discomfort for the baby. After a 6-month trial, the lab reported that the new process of drawing 0.6ml versus 1.2ml is working well. So a new change is being implemented to require only 1 (rather than 2) LiHep Microtainer tubes for ANEO Chem panels. • Double-Sided Badges Our clinical and professional staff are an active bunch and always on the go. Consequently, our name badges worn on lanyards are prone to flipping over, making it difficult for our patients to read our names. One of our employees came up with the idea of a double-sided name badge. This suggestion was enthusiastically accepted and implemented. • Extended Cafeteria Hours One of our employees made the simple suggestion of expanding our cafeteria hours an extra 20 minutes to give colleagues with specific break times enough time to enjoy the hot lunch specials. This simple suggestion also helped ease wait times at the grill during the late lunch period. • Wheelchair-Accessible Picnic Tables One of our employees noticed that patients in wheelchairs were not able to enjoy meals outdoors at the picnic tables in one of our courtyards. In response to the Voice Form, new wheelchair-accessible tables were installed so that patients could enjoy more time outside in the (almost always) beautiful Santa Barbara weather. Cottage Values Employees’ Input on Big Decisions NEW: This year, a proposal is being explored to move Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital (which was recently newly built and expanded to accommodate such a need). Management sought out employees’ thoughts, opinions and questions. On the recent Fortune employee survey, 92% of employees said Cottage Health is a great place to work. Face-to-Face Interactions Employees are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback at Employee Forums and C3 (Collaborate, Create and Celebrate) events. Our executive offices are located at the hospital campuses. This provides our CEO and executive team with a firsthand look at the delivery of health care on a day-to-day basis. Our executive leaders are personable and approachable, and consistently receive high scores on employee engagement surveys. We also use more formal venues, such as employee forums and staff meetings, to conduct regular short surveys on everything from employee events to benefits. When department size allows, many managers schedule weekly one-on-one meetings with each of their employees, and in larger departments employees are encouraged to meet directly when they have questions or want to provide feedback to their manager. Our CEO also holds one-on-one meetings with his direct reports. 70/119 Start | Contents | Highlights | Business Description | Hiring & Welcoming | Inspiring | Speaking | Listening | Thanking | Developing | Caring | Celebrating | Sharing • Listening 6.28
